Singing Teacher | Feldenkrais Practitioner

As an accomplished singing teacher and certified Feldenkrais practitioner, I bring a wealth of experience and a unique, holistic approach to vocal training and personal development.

My diverse teaching portfolio includes both classical and musical theatre singers, ranging from conservatoire undergraduates to aspiring professionals. Notable successes include guiding a musical theatre student to secure scholarships at multiple prestigious London institutions. I have also successfully prepared numerous students for ABRSM and Trinity College London grade exams.

In addition to private instruction, I lead Feldenkrais Method group classes in various settings, including online platforms, Trinity Laban’s undergraduate program, and at Laban Health. This work exemplifies my commitment to integrating somatic practices with vocal pedagogy.

My expertise extends to language coaching, particularly in German and Swedish. I regularly lead projects at Trinity Laban, introducing students to the rich Swedish song repertoire and providing language coaching. This specialisation has also led to collaborations with professional singers seeking to refine their language skills.

Further enhancing my pedagogical approach, I have extensively studied the Accent Method with renowned experts Ron Morris and Sophie Grimmer, incorporating these techniques into my teaching practice.

The synergy between singing and the Feldenkrais Method is at the core of my practice. All these disciplines rely on a profound understanding of the mind-body connection, enabling students to become more embodied and authentic in their expression, whether through voice or movement.

Building on my extensive professional experience, I am currently undertaking a PhD at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. My research investigates the effects of the Feldenkrais Method on singing. This study aims to bridge the gap between somatic practices and vocal pedagogy. Through this work, I hope to contribute valuable insights to both the fields of music education and movement studies, further solidifying the connection between bodily awareness and vocal excellence.

I hold an MMus (Distinction) in Vocal Performance from Trinity Laban, a BA in Music from the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts and a BLaw from the University of Lucerne.

Antonia Thwaites

SINGING TEACHER

  • Antonia Thwaites is an English-Egyptian classical soprano and singing teacher from the Isle of Wight now based in Greenwich, London. She started singing lessons at the age of nine and at sixteen was accepted on a full scholarship to Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester. Here, she began her specialist music training and was later accepted to Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance as a ‘Trinity College London’ Scholar. She graduated with First Class Honours in 2022 and continues to develop her voice with singing teacher Sophie Grimmer and repetiteur Panaretos Kyriatzidis.

    Antonia is passionate about vocal education, and alongside private teaching, works at the John Roan School, Greenwich Music School and for Prelude Music Education. During their tour to India, Antonia also gave masterclasses to the vocal students at Christ University Bangalore. She has recently started to study for a Post-Graduate Certificate in Vocal Pedagogy with the University of Wales Trinity St David, with a particular focus on vocal health. 

    Antonia teaches with a strong emphasis on building holistic, detailed technique, striving to always put the individual at the centre by finding unique ways to make this accessible and fun. Teaching is all about deep listening, not only listening intently to the student and their voice but teaching them how to ‘listen’ to their body and develop their own kinaesthetic awareness. From the first lessons therefore, students learn about the body and the way the voice works. She addresses this through exercises and breathing techniques, as well as songs appropriate to age and stage. For those interested in gaining a qualification, Antonia also guides students through the ABRSM grades and prepares them for exams. She aims to create a fun, nurturing environment where learning and confidence can be optimised. 

    In 2021, Antonia studied in Bologna, Italy at the Conservatorio di Musica G.B. Martini under Francesca Pedaci, where she studied ‘Bel Canto’ and improved her spoken Italian. Notably, she was invited to sing in a masterclass with Leone Magiera, known for his extensive work with Pavarotti and Mirella Freni, whilst also studying with Teatro Comunale repetiteur Giorgio D’Alonzo. She was also a finalist in the British Art Song Competition, resulting in a masterclass with Dame Sarah Connolly for the London Song Festival alongside pianist Francesca Lauri.

    In 2022, Antonia performed the role of ‘Susanna’ in Le Nozze di Figaro at The National Liberal Club London, in an abridgment she arranged and directed herself. More recent operatic performances include 'Narrator One' and ‘Ensemble’ - Ruth (Pegasus Opera Company, 2023),'Echo' - Ariadne auf Naxos (Uncovered Opera Company, 2023), ‘Chorus’ - La Traviata (Instant Opera Company). Recent recital venues include The Bangalore International Centre and Pune Music Society during a concert tour to India (2023), and the National Liberal Club, London (2023/24). Other roles include ‘Zerlina’ Don Giovanni, ‘Suor Genovieffa’ - Suor Angelica, and the title role of the same opera, ‘Suor Angelica’.
